Corals and Sunscreens

Every year about 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in the ocean.
But what’s that bad about that?

Well, let’s step back.
Corals are basically little polyps form a living mat over a calcium carbonate skeleton.

So yes corals are alive!!

The science community has lately discovered that Oxybenzone and Octinoxate , two elements contained in commercial sunscreens are threatening coral life.

These substances can disrupt coral’s reproduction and growth cycles, ultimately leading to bleaching.

Once a coral loses its color its basically dead.
